The super-awesome Chi-Yu Chen is a student at the Royal College of Art in London, UK. He has designed a nifty concept were like many of the now implemented public bike systems, (such as the Bixi system that I experienced first hand in my jaunt to Montreal), you rent a bike from one of many designated stations and return the bike to another station which is closest to your destination.
Chi-Yu Chen takes this concept to a whole new level. He has designed a new module to fit inside the brake system of a bike and it generates energy from your braking and cycling! This generated energy is stored inside a ultracapacitor and ultimately put back into the energy grid of the city via the bike station.
Stemming from this, Chi-Yu Chen proposes that this energy be used to power hybrid buses and riders can receive credit towards their bus passes from the energy they generate riding the bike! It’s a complete win-win situation! Not only would traffic congestion lower, emissions would too.
Here is a visual explanation:
and a nifty video of Chi-Yu Chen explaining his concept:
WIN!
