Jackson’s Journal (5/1/09) – All New, Carbon Negative Office Furniture!

Heyo SuperForesters!

I am home on this gloomy day in New York and not out tromping through the woods, (as SuperForester Jo so smartly suggested. Thank you, Jo.) as I am busily building a home office.

Here’s a video!

SuperForester Jackson’s Journal (5/1/09) from SuperForest on Vimeo.

For a month, every time I saw some good building materials in the street, I’d drag them home and soon I had a corner filled with stuff. I sat and stared at all the stuff for a while, until a mental picture began to form…

This picture showed me how to turn this:

Which, after I had cut down all the paper tubes to length, became this!:

Cha chang!

I didn’t even use power tools! I used a hand saw! It was so much fun!

This bench is great for many reasons. One, it is custom for that space exactly. It is exactly as wide as the credenza on the left, and exactly as high as a plant stand on the right. The paper tubes I found are so strong, you can lie down on it, step on it, jump up and down, all without fear of winding up on failblog.

To finish the bench, I’m going to combine the paper tubes into four sections, each covered with a layer of papĂ®er-mache. This will keep the tubes from rolling, provide added strength, and will look nice. I’ll keep the ends uncovered so that you can see my handiwork.

Now all it needs is a bit of foam, some fabric for a cover, and perhaps a throw pillow or two.

Best of all, because I only used “trash” (ahem,) to build this sturdy bench, one can easilly call it carbon-negative. Also, it was free. Also, it was fun. Also, it was really good exercise. Really, really, really good exercise.

So, I stayed indoors and got some exercise, and a strong bench was a happy side effect.

Much love,

Jackson

Paper tube win!

(this photo took me, like seven tries.)

Negativity

Ha ha!

The only negative we’re interested in is carbon negative.

Love to all,

First Rock Port, Then the World!

Just saw this over at treehugger.

Wind Power Produces 123% of Residential Energy Demand in Rock Port, Missouri

“Rock Port, Missouri, is a small city of 1,300 people, and they just made history by being the first city in the US to be 100% powered by the wind, also making them #1 in the US for percentage of renewable energy. The Loess Hills Wind Farm, built by the Wind Capital Group, employing 500 workers from 20 states for about a year, is expected to produce about 16 million kilowatt hours annually, while Rock Port only uses 13 million. The excess wind power will be sold to other communities in the area.”

Power meters spinning backward? A U.S. city exporting energy? If they can do it in Rock Port, we can do it in Manhattan!

Big, big change is in the wind, y’all! News like this makes our Thursdays great.

Thank you to treehugger for bringing this to our attention, and a huge thank you to the people of Rock Port, Missouri for leading the charge. First Rock Port, then the world!

Yayyyyyy!!!!!

One grid down; many, many to go.

(note: just found this on youtube!)

Sassy!
