Recycling Old Oil Into Candles

This here post is about candles. The clever folks at filt-made.com have begun a very innovative new business: candles made from old cooking oil! The oil is filtered to remove any odours, vanilla scent is added and the mixture is poured into recycled glass jars. The website is mostly in Japanese though I scooped up some lovely pics of said fantabulous rainbow-coloured recycled candles from it.

Pretty, aren’t they? And I so heart the tagline, “Wanna make a small waves.”

After YouTube-ing “Amateur candlemaking”, I stumbled on two Australian kids, Taylor and Hunter Reilly, who, with the help of their old man, have started kidscandlecompany.com their very own business of making and selling beeswax candles. The boys currently sell their candles online and have made the very generous decision to donate 25% of profits to charity Kiva.org. Another 25% will go back into the business and they’ll split the remaining 50% among themselves.

Here’s a vid of their very first candlemaking attempt. Prepare to smile.

Turn a Candle Into a Radiator!

Are you cold? Great little link here that shows you how to turn an ordinary candle and flowerpot into a very energy efficient space heater.

SuperSmart!

Check out heatstick.com

They’ve got three cool projects up: a candle heater (that could also be powered by a 60 watt halogen bulb,) a year-round insulated greenhouse, and a passive solar water heater.

Looky here:

All of these items are for sale on the site, but the D.I.Y. spirit is plainly visible, and the pictures practically beg you to make your own versions.

Love to all,
