Buy Nothing Day was started in Vancouver in 1992 as an international day of protest against consumerism observed by social activists, and eventually came to be observed in the U.S. on the day after Thanksgiving…. (and the Saturday after in the rest of the world). Usually dubbed “Black Friday” here in the US, it’s traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.
The video below might trigger flashbacks of standing 20 deep in the checkout line at Target, but it also presents some guilt-inducing facts about the waste we create every day. Lest we forget the pandemonium and riots created by Big Box Store sales….that alone is enough to deter me from waking up at 4am to get the best deals.
What do you think SuperForesters? Will you be participating in anything aside from leftovers the day after Thanksgiving?
thinking of ways to reinvent it as “Do Something Day”…
