Amazing Robotics: A Hand That Can “Feel”

Good morning, SuperForest!

This weekend, I’ve found myself overwhelmed with water shortage/conservation research, downtown redevelopment sketches and land use planning midterms. That being so, I’m going to keep this one short and sweet.

We’ve covered robotic prosthetics before but recently, BBC News reported that a team of researchers from Italy and Sweden has developed what is believed to be “the first artificial hand that has feeling”. They’ve attached this robotic hand to the arm of a 22-year-old that lost his hand due to cancer and he receives this “feeling” sensation through the connection of his nerve endings to tiny electronic sensors.

Amazing. Just like Robin’s Gandhi shirt. : )

Love to all on this bright and beautiful Saturday.

Thai Spiderman to the Rescue!

O SuperForest, I just loves me an uplifting news blurp… especially ones of the hilarious and random variety.  Like this one:

That adorable little 8-year old with the boba tea in hand and the rad shirt on, is autistic.  The story goes… on his first day at special needs school, little man tate there climbed onto the ledge of his 3rd story classroom and couldn’t be coaxed back in.

Cue SpiderMan!

And this has to be my favorite part: “A remark by his mother about his passion for comic superheroes prompted fireman Somchai Yoosabai to rush back to the station, where he kept a Spider-Man costume in his locker.”

Allow me to repeat that last bit… he kept a spider-man costume in his locker!  How awesome is that?  I mean imagine if every cop had a superman cape on backup, every lifegaurd a submariner suit in his tower.  In any event it worked: “The sight of Mr Yoosabai dressed as Spider-Man and holding a glass of juice for him, brought a big smile to the boy’s face, and he promptly threw himself into the arms of his “superhero”.

Gotta love that.  Thanks friendly neighborhood spider-man!  And thanks bbc news for the report!
