Sesame Street’s Born To Add

UPDATE: Ha! In an amusing, if minor, example of the Coincidence Explosion, it’s just been pointed out to me that today is in fact Springsteen’s birthday! I stand by this as a heartfelt and awesome tribute, Boss

Hi SuperForest

So, as you know, I love Jim Henson (who doesn’t?!). Well, I also love Bruce Springsteen – and the biggest smile I’ve had this week has come from this little gem:

Yes, the modern classic (can an album released in 1983 still be ‘modern’? no matter) “Born To Add” – “a collection of rock and roll songs from Sesame Street. Many of the songs … were parodies of popular classic rock bands.” So: Sesame Street and popular classic rock parodies?! I would feel sad that I had lived this long in ignorance if I weren’t so happy to have just discovered it. The cover itself is a parody of Bruce’s classic Born to Run:

The album was nominated for the 1984 Grammy Award for Best Recording for Children, but lost out to the Michael Jackson-narrated read-along album from E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Which frankly is another album that I would love to know. Dang, 1984: a strong year for childrens recordings.  The album contains such treats as I Am a Chicken by A Chicken and Hey Food by Cookie Monster and The Sesame Street Beetles:

But, for me, it’s got to be the titular tune. The video is also great, and having watched a ‘making of’ on how muppet/Sesame Street puppeteers work, I’m so struck by the skill they have in conveying human mood and emotion,  just through the movements of their hands. Enjoy:

Because smiling is important,

Love
