Internet Treasure – HelloGiggles.com

SuperForest!

I have found an amazing site that is right up SuperForest lane! It is called HelloGiggles.com. It was founded by three amazing women, actress/musician ZOOEY DESCHANEL, producer SOPHIA ROSSI and writer/Internet Sensation MOLLY MCALEER. They themselves describe it as:

the ultimate entertainment destination for smart, independent and creative females. Everything hosted on the site will be lady-friendly, so visitors need not worry about finding the standard Boys Club content that makes many entertainment sites unappealing to so many of us.

And let me tell you it is full of gems and giggles and love and thoughtfulness. The team over at HelloGiggles is large and in charge, and I want you all to go check it out.

Here is an example of the greatness found on their site. Just one small kid, bringing his school into the raptures. Enjoy!

Lila Roo – aWall

My friends Lila Roo and Jesse are artists and geniuses. She crafts beautiful and intricate costumes out of recycled plastic and travels the world making art, and he’s a video/sound/collage alchemist. They’ve joined forces to create a one-two hug of sweet smelling whimsy.

LR&J have put together a kickstarter campaign to create a mobile white wall to put art upon or create art in front of, and move it about the planet, inspiring and creating in an endless mobius strip of delight.

Sayeth Lila Roo:

“The purpose of aWall is to share art, music, performance, and film outside of normative spaces; museums, galleries, private collections, studios, music halls, and theaters. Thereby facilitating multi-sensory, and participatory creative expression beyond walls.  In order to tear down the walls that box us and our creations “in”, we have decided to construct a singular, linear, transportable 8′x24′ wall that can exist out in the open, and move from place to place reaching a broad and diverse audience.”

Lila and Jesse have 34 hours to raise the remaining five thousand they seek to fund aWall. Melissa and I gave ‘em some smackers. If you vibe with them and want to help support the arts, check out their kickstarter page and follow the links.

Christina Perri on Fear and Strength

Heyo SuperForesters!

You may recognize singer/songwriter/musician Christina Perri from her uber-famous Twilight ballad A Thousand Years, or perhaps you know her from her heartbreakingly honest song, Jar of Hearts. But let’s get serious, most of you probably know her because she sang with SuperForest’s favourite son.

I came across this video yesterday and I was so amazed at:

a) Her super beautiful glossy hair

b) Her unbelievable video game analogy

c) Her badass fearless attitude!

Enjoy this video where Christina drops some serious knowledge about going to the edge, facing your fears, pushing on and going for your dreams! YES!

Slowly I started to make these conscious decisions to do the thing that I was afraid of…and I’m so serious that the minute I did that it was like all these doors appeared…

Rock on, sister! “Feel the fear, and do it anyway!”

P.S., I talk a lot too ;)

And for your musical enjoyment, please enjoy Christina’s latest hit, A Thousand Years:

Please Support Mama Lion Midwifery IndieGoGo Campaign

Aloha SuperForest!

Since finding out that we are pregnant, my research and experience has lead me to appreciate the incredible service that midwives offer in supporting women and encouraging our true power and intuition on this transformative journey in growing, birthing, and parenting a new human being.

Jackson’s beautiful sister, Nile Nash, has launched an IndieGoGo fund raising campaign for her latest and greatest endeavor: A Midwifery Clinic in San Francisco. Complete with annual exams, full midwifery care, and, while she’s down there, a waxing! With 14 days left in her campaign, this Mama Lion will surely appreciate all support given. Be sure to check out the rewards she’s offering, like fancy hand knitted hats and even a well woman exam.

Help this amazing woman help other amazing women!

Love you Nile, and all the midwives of the world.

Love + Aloha,

Melissa

At the Edge of the Solar System

Good morning SuperForest!

You may be familiar with this pale blue dot:

Hooray Earth!

And  you may remember the beloved Carl Sagan’s words about this image:

“We succeeded in taking that picture [from deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.”

And, being that we are a repository of existential loveliness, you may remember Jordan and Jackson’s fabulous posts. But hark! There’s news!

As I type these words on a chilly gray Park Slope (fancy!) day, our species may just be crossing a threshold. This cosmic coming-of-age is due to the fact that Voyager 1 and 2, that dynamic duo of interstellar explorers is in the blazing precarity of the heliosphere, the outermost edge of our solar system, where the wooshing solar winds meet interstellar gases, and beyond lies … the unknown. As in, team humanity is almost out of reach of our fair and noble Sun’s magnetic fields, and those lovely little Voyagers are about to — as in within the next decade — exit into the greatest of beyond. Our first kiss with the outer cosmos. And you always remember your first.

Hooray humanity, and our soon-to-be universe smooch!

This post inspired by the wowtastic RADIOLAB from WNYC, which might be the most aurally delicious podcast around.

Role Model: Ken Lyotier of United We Can

BINNER (BIN – NER): Someone who works scavenging through the garbage bins with the prospect of finding reusable and recyclable items that can be exchanged for cash.

Through pure chance (and possibly magic) I have had the pleasure of listening to inspiring Vancouverite Ken Lyotier, founder of United We Care speak twice in the past week! The first time I heard him talk I literally cried. This man has such a big heart. He compels me to love more, to reach further, and to go bigger.

According to this news article:

A minister at a local United Church secured the two $1,500 from a trust fund. With the money Lyotier and his friend organized a one-day bottle depot at Victory Square and paid people who turned in bottles and cans.

“It was a really good event, but it was a total loser as a business because they were non-refundable,” Lyotier said. “The thing was, it did bring a pile of people together that were kind of like us, close to the street and scratching to try to make any little nickel or dime.”

They formed United We Can, which officially set up shop in 1995 in a 2,700-square-foot space. It employed the “hardest to hire” and even chased after its workers to convince them to come to work. In the early days, the bottle depot reimbursed 150 binners on a busy day.

There is an even more awesome video about Ken and what they do on the United We Care homepage. From their website:

We all know the value of recycling, but what if your recyclables helped alleviate poverty?

Green (sustainable) economic development is a path out of poverty.  United We Can has been a pioneer in what is now being called the “Third Green Wave,” a combination of environmentalism and social equity.   For fifteen years United We Can has been an advocate for marginalized people and the environment. United We Can provides people with support, training, and “green collar jobs.” These jobs help lift people out of debilitating poverty and help create community opportunities in a place commonly referred to as “Canada’s poorest postal code.”

I love how this idea for binning has been so revolutionary that it has swept the globe. Binners are in every city I have visited. It astounds me to think that there was a time before binning was common practice… before recycling was common! What if we gave all trash the value we gave recyclables and created new exciting projects instead of landfills? Gee whiz, the future excites me!
