The Crisis of Credit

Normally we post about happier things here at SuperForest, but I found this video so informative that I felt it had to be shared with y’all. I realize I may be a little slow and that the stimulus package has already been laid out, but I believe that if we are going to stop this kind of thing from happening again we need to know why it all started.

If you’re like me, you may have some understanding about the credit crisis. You hear certain terms thrown around (like sub-prime mortgages), but the big picture is still kind of hard to grasp.

This excellent animation by Jonathan Jarvis lays out the credit crisis in simple, easy-to-understand steps. I hope you find this video as helpful as I did in understanding just what is going on, and maybe going forward we can prevent this kind of thing from happening again.

Music

This week has been a little music festival at SuperForest hasn’t it? I’ll keep the train rolling.

SuperForester Carla asked me nicely to repost my comment from Jackson’s beautiful post, and I obliged:

The power of music is truly amazing.

Before Sunday of this week, I had never heard the full version of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech. It has been only three days since that day, and already I have his powerful words ingrained into my thought process.

In a time before television, before radio, before mass media, you could tell the emotional state of a nation based on the music that came out of it. Throughout America’s terrible period of slavery, the slaves created some of the most uplifting and hope-filled music of that time. Even when their bodies were broken and beaten, the slaves’ will and faith stood strong. I believe a big part of this had to do with their music. We still listen to a descendant of that music today, I believe the youngsters are calling it, “Rock and Roll”?

The Gregory Brothers have proved a theory that I (and many others) have long thought true:

Music is the most powerful vehicle for words.

Think about it. Your ABC’s? How many of us can say we learned them without the help of “twinkle twinkle little star”? How many of us know the lyrics to Britney Spears’ “Hit me baby one more time”? Now stop and think how many of us know the Bill of Rights? All ten of them? I’ll give you ten to one odds that the majority of people know the former (Britney) and not the latter (Constitution).

Even if you aren’t religious, I highly recommend taking a look at some of the old hymns and spirituals from a period we all seem to have forgotten. In a time of uncertainty (both economic AND health), it would behoove us all to take a page from a group of people who had it much harder than we ever will.

So in spirit of this week’s music theme, I present to you a gospel about, what else? Music.

Ladies and Gents, Sister Rosetta Tharpe:

(Stick around for 1:25, you’ll be glad you did)

MMMmmm! Not only can she sing, but she can shred! That Gibson SG is a real beauty.

Here’s to Music!

Here’s to Life!

Yours,

Spoon

Piece Together For Peace

The peeps over at Graflex Directions have an awesome project they did back in 2007:

The project is called “Piece Together For Peace” and it consists of all the landmasses of the world, rearranged to form the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac.horse

Our current year, 2009, is represented by the lovable Ox (which just happens to be the same animal I was born under).ox

Here is the story, straight from the artist’s website:

Jasmine

I receive forwards from friends and family all the time. Most are funny, some are beautiful, and others are inspirational. But few tug at the heart strings like the one I received from my mother today.

This is the story of Jasmine.

Jasmine

In 2003, police in Warwickshire, England, opened a garden shed and found a whimpering, cowering dog. It had been locked in the shed and abandoned. It was dirty and malnourished, and had clearly been abused.

In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a Greyhound female, to the nearby Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, run by a man named Geoff Grewcock and known as a willing haven for Animals abandoned, orphaned or otherwise in need. Geoff and the other sanctuary staff went to work with two aims to restore the dog to full health, and to win her trust. It took several weeks, but eventually both goals were achieved.

11

They named her Jasmine, and they started to think about finding her an adoptive home.

But Jasmine had other ideas. No-one remembers now how it began, but she started welcoming all Animal arrivals at the sanctuary. It wouldn’t matter if it was a puppy, a fox cub, a rabbit or, any other lost or hurting Animal, Jasmine would peer into the box or cage and, where possible, deliver a welcoming lick.

21

Geoff relates one of the early incidents. “We had two puppies that had been abandoned by a nearby railway line. One was a Lakeland Terrier cross and another was a Jack Russell Doberman cross. They were tiny when they arrived at the centre and Jasmine approached them and grabbed one by the scruff of the neck in her mouth and put him on the settee. Then she fetched the other one and sat down with them, cuddling them.”

“But she is like that with all of our animals, even the rabbits. She takes all the stress out of them and it helps them to not only feel close to her but to settle into their new surroundings.

3

“She has done the same with the fox and badger cubs, she licks the rabbits and guinea pigs and even lets the birds perch on the bridge of her nose.”

Jasmine, the timid, abused, deserted waif, became the animal sanctuary’s resident surrogate mother, a role for which she might have been born.

The list of orphaned and abandoned youngsters she has cared for comprises five fox cubs, four badger cubs, 15 chicks, eight guinea pigs, two stray puppies and 15 rabbits.

And one roe deer fawn. Tiny Bramble, 11 weeks old, was found semi-conscious in a field. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, Jasmine cuddled up to her to keep her warm, and then went into the full foster mum role.

Jasmine the greyhound showers Bramble the Roe deer with affection.

4

“They are inseparable,” says Geoff “Bramble walks between her legs and they keep kissing each other. They walk together round the sanctuary. It’s a real treat to see them.”

5Jasmine will continue to care for Bramble until she is old enough to be returned to woodland life. When that happens, Jasmine will not be lonely. She will be too busy showering love and affection on the next Orphan or victim of abuse.

6

From left, Toby, a stray Lakeland dog; Bramble, orphaned Roe deer; Buster, a stray Jack Russell; a dumped rabbit; Sky, an injured barn owl; and Jasmine with a Mothers heart doing best what a caring Mother would do.

To the unnamed author who penned this wonderful story, thank you. If anyone has any more information on this story, please feel free to send it in and I will continue to update.

After a little digging, I found the original article that the forward came from. It can be seen in full here.

The Arava Institute

“Teaching Students Today So Nations Will Work Together Tomorrow”

The Arava Institute of Environmental Studies, or AIES, is “the premier environmental education and research program in the Middle East, preparing future Arab and Jewish leaders to cooperatively solve the region’s environmental challenges.”

The Arava Institute is built around three central programs: Research, Academics, and Leadership. Its main purpose is to educate students about current environmental issues and technology, play a leading role in the region’s research and sustainable development, and to provide future leaders with the tools necessary for dealing with environmental problems in a peaceful and cooperative manner.

“Here, the idea that nature knows no political borders is more than a belief. It is a fact, a curriculum, and a way of life. ”

Arava is building bridges across the Middle East. By using environmental studies as a common ground, the AIES  is connecting people of different races and religions that otherwise would never have had the chance to communicate with each other. Programs like Arava give us all hope and inspiration not only for tomorrow, but for today as well.

But wait! It gets better.

Arava is looking for students for next year! They offer courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. There are sessions available for summer, fall, and spring terms.

If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about The Arava Institute, feel free to contact Rabbi Michael Cohen with any questions at:

Meditation and…Beer?

Today is a special holiday for folks who like to wear green, party in the street, and watch some cool parades.

Another St. Patrick’s Day tradition that has some other benefits is drinking beer (especially of the green variety).

Ode Magazine had a recent article in their latest issue entitled “Zen and the art of drinking beer”

I know what some of you may be thinking: “How is drinking beer a medatitive process?”

I’ll let the author, Sung, explain:

I receive the question quite often about meditation in my clinical practice. What is meditation? How do I do it? And what are the benefits? Quite simply, meditation is the intentional practice of experiencing life in the present moment. It’s about realizing the power of now vs. the power of the past or future.

When we meditate, we can feel our breath trickle past our nose, tickle our throat, and expand our lungs and diaphragm. It is the moment when we lie down in bed after a long day, and luxuriate in the warmth and comfort of the sheets. And it is the sipping and enjoyment of a frosty mug of beer.

Drinking beer can be a meditative practice. Or not. The binge drinking of our college years in which we slurped down cans of Natural Light was mindless. What we are seeking is mindful activity. If you go to a pub and request an aromatic Pliny the Elder or a Brother David’s Double, first observe the beer. Watch the colors, the swirling of the amber liquid, and the haze created by unfiltered and cask-conditioned ale. Then bring the glass to your nose and take a whiff. This can actually be one of the best parts of drinking beer, enjoying the nose.

On an IPA or Pale Ale, you’ll usually enjoy a floral or citrusy bouquet followed by a sweet and then bitter taste when drunk. On a nut brown ale, the smell will usually be more subdued and slightly nutty. The flavor profile will be sweet and malty. As we sip our beer, wash the liquid over different parts of the tongue. Taste the different flavors as the beer is finally swallowed and note how “thick” or “thin” the flavor is. And as we open our eyes, we’ve finished a meditation session.

During this time, we haven’t thought about our job, holiday shopping or our weight loss diet. We’ve focused on each moment as it passed before us and experienced it fully. That is the power of meditation: to embrace each moment and not yearn for something else.

We can meditate on anything we choose. Some people meditate using their breath or on yoga poses. Anything can be used for the practice of meditation, for the practice of mindful living. So next time you lift up a frosty glass of beer, just tell everyone around you that this is part of your spiritual practice.

This article spoke to me directly because I love beer. Not in the way John Belushi loves beer, but rather in a way one might love tea or coffee. It is astonishing to me that by using only four simple ingredients, you can produce thousands upon thousands of varieties of essentially the same drink. Discovering and exploring these varieties is what I love about it.

But the best part about this advice is that it can be applied toward just about anything. When you are doing something you really love, whether it be surfing, fishing, cooking, sewing, drawing, or even spending a lazy, sunny Sunday afternoon laying in the hammock, your mind will stay in the moment. You are not thinking about things to come, nor things that have been. You simply think about things that are.

A wise turtle once said, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.”

Enjoy today.

Always,

Spoon

Single-Tasking

In today’s world we are always multi-tasking.  Everywhere people go they are usually doing at least two things at once: Checking email at lunch, talking on the phone while driving, or even twittering during a speech. While multi-tasking can be good, it is important to know when it is better to focus on a single thing rather than several things at once.

Thanks to Caterina.net courtesy of ffffound!, I happened upon this informative guide on how to single-task.

It took me a second look before I realized that I do not follow any of these tips! I really need to work on single-tasking. If you’re like me and tend to take on too many things at once, keep a copy of this chart as a reminder on how to single-task.

P.S. – And for SuperForester Jackson’s birthday, I did something I should have done a long time ago:

Step 1: Find your toilet

Step 2: Find a sinkable object roughly the shape of a brick

Step 3: Place said item in water tank

Step 4: Replace lid and BAM! You're saving water!

Confused? Check out Jackson’s original toilet hack here.

George Harrison in a Surf Contest

When SuperForester Taylor contacted me and asked if I could put up a post for him in honor of SuperForester Jackson’s birthday (due to poor internet access), he gave me a couple great ideas. One  was to use a Beatles’ song, and the other was to put up a funny old cartoon.  Well those two great ideas had a baby and made one awesome idea!

I would like to present The Beatles Cartoon, Episode 19: “With Love from Me to You”:

(“Happy Birthday Jackson!” – Love, SuperForester Taylor)

Give it up for Lent

Yesterday marked the beginning of an annual traditional Catholic ritual called Lent.

For those of us who may not be familiar, Lent is a forty day period where followers will fast in some form as a sign of repentance and preparation for Easter.

Outside of the Catholic faith, many secular people participate in Lent as a form of self-sacrifice, usually giving up a vice,  whether it be chocolate, soda, cigarettes, etc. But there is another important part of Lent that many people either do not know, or simply do not choose to participate in: Almsgiving.

Volunteer Hands

If you do not have money to spare (and a lot of us don’t), There is another suggestion that will not only exempt your checkbook, but also make you feel really good.

Volunteer.

Volunteer at your local food drive or shelter. Go visit a nearby nursing home and chat with the residents. Call up your local government and ask if there are any road or park clean-up projects you can help out with. Even if it is for only one day out of the entire forty day season, try to put your hands to use building homes for the underprivileged. There are thousands upon thousands of organizations and communities who could always use that little extra help.

No words you say will speak louder than your actions, and the lives you touch will fill you to the brim with positive energy, leaving you with a smile that will last for days.

So for this Lent season try giving up your time. You will be glad you did.
