SuperForesters, What are you doing for Earth Day?

With Earth Day 2011: A Billion Acts of Green only one week from today, I find myself pondering how my family and I can best express our gratitude to Mother Earth.  Honestly, either because of my crazy hectic life, or perhaps my flakeyness,  most likely a combination of both…I usually don’t even realize Earth Day is here until the little MSNBC Logo turns green for the week. I just don’t keep track of holidays and birthdays very well (and don’t even start talking anniversaries…I forgot MY OWN wedding anniversary this year!) and unless it’s Christmas or the first or last day of the girls’ school, I can’t gaurantee I know it’s coming.

So, since I know Earth Day is coming, ;), I’ve actually checked out the Earth Day website and I love this year’s theme: A Billion Acts of Green.  The idea is simple…pledge to do one thing…big or small.  FABULOUS!

So, I’m ultra stoked that I know Earth Day is next week, and I am excited to be able to put some thought into it.  And I’m SUPER excited to get some ideas from all of you SuperPeeps!  So…what are you doing?  Planting Something?  Cleaning Something?  Meditating and Being Gracious?  Getting involved in a community project?  Making a promise to change one small habit? Getting where you need to go by only walking (or running, if you’re the running type) or bicycling?  Using zero plastic bags?  Eat more (or only) local food?

You can make your pledge and see what others are pledging here.  I am still undecided on my pledge.  I have ideas such as creating and completing a couple more veggie garden patches in the emerging yarden, and I will decide on one small habit to change…with kids, disposable paper products is a hard one for me to overcome…mainly the plates…we did successfully transition to cloth napkins awhile ago :).  But I would also like to do something a little more out of my comfort zone, and that inspiration has yet to emerge.

So…SUPERFOREST…Let’s share ideas and inspire each other!!  I can’t wait to hear what everyone has planned!!

Emily’s Journal: Urban Wildlife

GOOD MORNING SUPERFOREST!!!

On our way to school, the girls and I saw two of our deer friends on the edge of the cemetary woods having breakfast in the morning mist.

When my daughter (home “sick” from school…I suspect she’s got a case of the Mondays a few days late) and I strolled up the walk, we found these two beauties enjoying the sunrise from the peak of our roof.

Ducks on a Roof

Loving the urban wildlife this morning! <3

Go out and enjoy life today, Superforest! Stand on the roof and watch the sunrise!

LOVE!

TED Talks – Design Meets Education

“How Will my Education Serve the World Positively?”

That’s what one of the high school students in one of Designer Trung Le’s summer workshops answered when asked to give some ideas on how to best facilitate learning.  I’d like to meet that student!

I first became familiar with Trung Le and his collagues at Cannon Design when they were selected as the design group for my daughters’ school’s campus unification project.  They are examining how design and education can be married to best facilitate learning at all ages.  He spoke earlier this month at the TEDxRESET conference in Istanbul.  It’s a fantastic way of looking at how we educate our children and how they actually learn, and how the environment they learn in plays an integral role in that.

He is also one of the authors of The Third Teacher.

From Amazon.com:

Created by an international team of architects and designers concerned about our failing education system, The Third Teacher explores the critical link between the school environment and how children learn, and offers 79 practical design ideas, both great and small, to guide reader’s efforts to improve our schools. Written for anyone who has school-age children in their life, from educators and education decision-makers to parents and community activists, this book is intended to ignite a blaze of discussion and initiative about environment as an essential element of learning. Including a wealth of interviews, facts, statistics, and stories from experts in a wide range of fields, this book is a how-to guide to be used to connect with the many organizations, individuals, and ideas dedicated to innovating and improving teaching and learning. Contributors include children’s singer and advocate Raffi, author and creativity consultant Sir Ken Robinson, scientist and environmentalist David Suzuki, inventor James Dyson, and other experts who are working to create fresh solutions to problems and create a new blueprint for the future of education.

From the group’s facebook page:

The Third Teacher Group is an inclusive network within the “ideas based practice” of Cannon Design that believes the “quantum entanglement” of design and learning transforms the ossified education system. The core group consists of Trung Le (moderator), Stephen Johnson, Sarah Malin, Christian Long and Peter Hourihan at Cannon Design as well as ad hoc global thought leaders and design thinkers representing a range of disciplines including Bruce Mau, Dr. Stephanie Pace Marshall, Jeff Leitner and their networks. The team engages and collaborates with learning/teaching communities to formulate systemic strategies for pedagogical, curricular, and environmental change, which are then manifested and solidified in the physical environment – “the third teacher.”

Our name is based on Loris Malaguzzi’s Reggio Emilia approach to education, which states that children learn through interactions. First are interactions with the adults in their lives, then with their peers, and ultimately the environment – which he called the third teacher. By redesigning a child’s learning environment, we change her reality and thus open the doors to new possibilities.

Jackson is More Hip!

What a wonderful way to start my day!

Please have a listen to a great interview with SuperForest’s very own Jackson on one of my favorite Podcasts, More Hip Than Hippie!  It’s FANTASTIC!!!  (Plus, you get to learn about the Three Ps. ;) )

Thank you Jackson, for sharing your time and life with us!!

PS Jackson – Your porn star name…one of the best I’ve heard…ever. ;)

Roseanne Barr – She’s a Nut!

Image via.

I don’t know about you, but Roseanne was a prime time staple in my house growing up.  While I always loved WATCHING Roseanne for entertainment, she wasn’t really someone I admired or looked up to.  I just thought she was a hilarious mess, and her TV family was more dysfunctional than my own, which I know shouldn’t have brought me joy, but, quite frankly, it did.  :)

Imagine my surprise when I saw her on Oprah yesterday and learned that she is now a NUT FARMER in the land of Aloha!  Macadamia nuts, to be exact.  Yup, Roseanne now considers herself, first and foremost, a farmer, and hopes to one day live completely off the food she grows on her 46-acre farm in Hawaii.  Now THAT inspires me.  In this video, Roseanne gives us a very funny, quick tour of her nut farm.  Watch until the end, because in my opinion, the last sentence Roseanne utters is definately the best.

And, because the universe loves us, we will be able to watch parts of Roseanne and her family’s journey through this new way of life on Lifetime, later this year.  According to People.com:

“They’ve said ‘Roseanne’s nuts’ for years, and now I’m going to make that a reality,” Barr says in a statement. “I’m all about nuts now. Macadamia nuts!”

Lifetime has ordered 16 half-hour episodes of the as-yet-untitled docu-series, and promises “a funny, outrageous and unfiltered look at the adventures of one of television’s greatest stars transitioning into a new life that is a far cry from Los Angeles,” according to a release.

Will you watch??????

PS – I wanted to find the complete episode for you, or at least the part where she talks about farming and how her life has changed, but unfortunately, Oprah’s full episodes are not available on line.  (Keep checking You Tube if interested though.)

Two Things…Boho Mag

Happy Evening Happy People!

Saw these two things in the Fall 2010 issue of Boho Mag and I wanted to share them with you.

The first is an article about Seth Aaron Henderson, the most recent winner of Project Runway.  He has teamed with SolarWorld for his new collection, incorportating the aesthetics of solar panel arrays into his line.  An excerpt from the article:

His recent partnership with SolarWorld (a solar technology company in Portland) is a perfect example of his willingness to try something that on the surface may look out-of-the-box. In designing the collection Seth Aaron SolarWorld by Portland Fashion Week, he will draw on his passion for a domestically manufactured solar solution to energy, and his interest in exploring the technology’s aesthetic possibilities. “Growing up in San Diego, solar panels were everywhere. It’s SolarWorld’s commitment to being a leader in this industry by keeping innovation always in mind that interests me,” he notes. “There was inspiration from the moment I stepped foot in the SolarWorld factory. Innovation and sustainability were overwhelming impressions. They gave me limitless possibilities for a high-concept fashion collection. I also love the statement we’re making from right here in my own back yard.”

Pretty cool.

The second thing I wanted to share was from the magazine’s “plant the {seed}” section.

the desire of your heart

Deep inside of you there is a well.  A deep well filled with dreams, visions, and ideas.  Thoughts of who you are, of what you will become, of what you have dreampt about your entire life; aching to come out, to be heard.

Today,  I can promise you that if you listen to those things, they will become you…because they are you.  They are the essence of what you were born to do, who you were born to be.

So today I ask that you listen, & believe.  That still small voice inside of you whispering.  It’s called your destiny.  And today you will find it, because it has already found you.  It’s time.

Maya Angelou, Love Liberates

image via Oprah

If you haven’t heard, Oprah has her OWN cable channel now.  It launched Jan, 1, 2011, I have found most of the shows entertaining and interesting so far.  One new series, Master Class (Sundays @ 10/9c), has unexpectedly become one of my favorites.  As described on the website,

They are the stories you’ve never heard from the people you thought you knew best. Handpicked by Oprah for their unique impact on the world, eight true modern masters sit down to share the untold stories that have shaped their lives and the greatest life lessons they’ve learned along the way. In an intimate setting, they open up about their successes, failures, triumphs, disappointments and heartbreaks.

Master Class offers an unprecedented first-person insight into the brilliant minds of famous people we love, respect and admire. First season masters include Diane Sawyer, Jay-Z, Dr. Maya Angelou, Simon Cowell, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Lorne Michaels and Oprah herself.

The most recent episode featured a SuperForest favorite, Maya Angelou.  She spoke of many things, but this quote on love, loving, and being loved really resonated with me.  Enjoy.

Love Liberates

“I am grateful to have been loved and to be loved now and to be able to love, because that liberates. Love liberates. It doesn’t just hold—that’s ego. Love liberates. It doesn’t bind. Love says, ‘I love you. I love you if you’re in China. I love you if you’re across town. I love you if you’re in Harlem. I love you. I would like to be near you. I’d like to have your arms around me. I’d like to hear your voice in my ear. But that’s not possible now, so I love you. Go.’” — Dr. Maya Angelou

Congrats to SFers Jason and Tristan!!!

Congratulations on your engagement, Jason and Tristan!

Another WIN for LOVE!!!!!!!

I’m sure I can speak for everyone here at SuperForest when I say,

We wish you both a lifetime of love and laughter together!!

Jason and Tristan

…and possibly a Zero One wedding? ;)

What can I do to make TODAY stand out?

Dali

Buenas Dias Mis Amors!  Just flying across the river and through the woods to Grandma’s house for Christmas, thinking about the story I saw on 60 Minutes last night. It was a story about individuals, one of which was Marilu Henner, who can remember EVERYTHING about their lives, a condition called Superior Autobiographical Memory.   While it was just simply interesting to watch them recall minute details about things that happened to them on specific dates, the one thing that struck me, towards the end of the interview, was this:

When asked if her extreme memory is a good thing and if she’s glad she has it, Owen said, “I am. I mean, sure, there are times when it’s difficult. But I feel like it makes me live my life with so much more intention and so much more joy.”

Asked what she means by “more intention,” Owen said, “Because I know that I’m gonna remember whatever happens today, it’s like, all right, what can I do to make today significant? What can I do that is gonna make today stand out?”

I wonder, how would I live my life if I knew I was going to remember EVERY MOMENT of it?  How would YOU live your life?  Should we live our lives that way regardless?  Interesting ideas to ponder…

The full interview and video can be seen here.

Love and Besos!
