On Happiness, or “Learning to be Unhappy” by Srikumar Rao

SuperForest! HI! I am so excited to talking to you all right now because I have wanted to share this with you guys for sooo long now!

OK, so this guy, Srikumar Rao, CHANGED MY LIFE! Okay, he didn’t quite do that, BUT he put in words a way of living that I had been trying, quite accidentally.  I did not realise I was functioning in this way until Mr. Rao made me see it and understand it. His talk is somewhat long, but I PROMISE it is worth it!

Now does this work? It sounds great and perfect..right? I’ll let you decide for yourself, but I think it does.  And like I told you he made me realise I was actually DOING what he said, this is my story of its success:

When I had stumbled upon SuperForest for the first time I knew I was in love.  I think most of us share that feeling.  The first thing I ever watched was SuperForester Jason’s interview with SuperForesters Chris, Iman, and Carla!  That moment I said selfishly and excitedly, “I WANT TO BE ON THAT WALL!! MY FACE!”  I didn’t think it would happen quite honestly.  It would be cool, but me on SuperForest?  Not me.  But I had already made that a goal in my mind, as I had instantly decided to never approach the idea of being on Team SuperForest with anyone, except in passing with a few friends.  Instead, and this is where Mr. Rao really comes in, I decided to become a PART of SuperForest; to begin to act and be more like the people I read on SuperForest, this so called “team.”  I then had my experience in New Haven, CT with some of my friends and got that story posted on SuperForest! It was the first time I had wrote to SuperForest, and I had no idea what to expect.  So I ended up getting this: click here.  WOW! I was blown away, and then guess what happened? People commented! That inspired me beyond all else.  I reached out, and others reached right back!  I started contacting members of the Team, introducing myself and getting to know them.  I started a blog of my own.  I decided that it would be my own conduit for sharing, connecting, and being.  I had read the Humanifesto, sure, but I had no idea what I was doing.  It just felt right, I knew I was doing.  I was being.  I became active in organisations, such as the Matt Wadleigh LoVE Foundation, I started reading other blogs, I hung up SuperForest posters around town, and most importantly I shared all of that through my blog.  And one day SuperForester Jackson asked me to join, quite out of the blue.  So, here I am.

I tell you this so I can say, “YOU can do it!”  We all have goals, we all want our own happiness.  But how do we start to accomplish this?  These are questions SuperForest and SuperForesters ask all the time.  Here is my idea on it (pushed into existence thanks to Mr. Rao).  Don’t focus on that new raise, focus on being the best you can be at work. Sure it is not always easy, sure you don’t always accomplish those goals right away.  But if you give your all into something, and you find your passion, or learn to become passionate, then you can accomplish whatever you want given time.  You will check off goal after goal.  I know I have, and rediscovering this has helped me so much get out of the crappy time I was in.

What Mr. Rao talks about is incredible, and so hope filling.  Why not give it a try?  What do you have to lose?  As he says, “If you aren’t excited to wake up everyday then YOU ARE NOT LIVING!”  Life is too short, let’s make it our own.  Only we can be the engine of change in our lives.  Being open to the wonders around us and saying, “YES!” can help us go far.  What are your thoughts on this? I’d love to hear because I also believe there is no “right” or “wrong” way to go about anything.  That, to me, is the beauty of humanity.

I will leave you with this quote by Chuck Close,

I always felt like inspiration was for amateurs, the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightening to strike you in the brain you aren’t going to make an awful lot of work.

Much, much, much love to all of you,

Mathew

What I Learned On the Road

Hello my dear SuperForest! I know I promised updates from the road; clearly I failed miserably. I’m sorry! As it goes, the number of hours in the day was far outweighed by the number of things I needed to accomplish. I hope you all have had a wonderful April (can you believe it’s almost May?) and to make up for my lack of sharing, here are a few things I learned on the road:

  1. It is possible to shower in 30 seconds, and to dry off with a towel the size of your hand.
  2. It is possible to eat a meal in about 90 seconds.
  3. When it’s 2 AM, you’ve been working for 16 hours, and you know you have to get up and do it all again in about 6, inside jokes make it easy to stay awake.
  4. When things go wrong, it’s better to laugh than cry. It’s better to be patient than to get mad. It’s better to find a creative solution than let it get to you.
  5. It’s hard to wake up when you’re in a bunk with no sunlight.
  6. A smile will get you everywhere.
  7. “Under Pressure” makes for the best encore.

Mercury is in Retrograde…So what’s that mean?

It’s an astrology thing. You can believe whatever you like about astrologists and horoscopes, but that stuff up there is pretty powerful. I can definitely feel the phases that move through the solar system and I like to know what is going on up there. It gives me a nice piece of mind. It doesn’t explain everything in my life, but it gives me comfort to know that this is happening.

Here is a little info that I grabbed off a handy astrology website. Mercury is currently in retrograde until May 11th.

In general, Mercury rules thinking and perception, processing and disseminating information and all means of communication, commerce, education and transportation. By extension, Mercury rules people who work in these areas, especially those who work with their minds or their wits: writers and orators, commentators and critics, gossips and spin doctors, teachers, travellers, tricksters and thieves.

Mercury retrograde gives rise to personal misunderstandings; flawed, disrupted, or delayed communications, negotiations and trade; glitches and breakdowns with phones, computers, cars, buses, and trains. And all of these problems usually arise because some crucial piece of information, or component, has gone astray or awry.

It is not exactly wise to make important decisions while Mercury is retrograde, since it is likely that such decisions will be clouded by misinformation, poor communication and careless thinking. Mercury is all about mental clarity and the power of the mind, so when Mercury is retrograde these intellectual characteristics tend to be less acute than usual, as the critical faculties are dimmed. Make sure you pay attention to the small print!

The key issue here is one of focus. Mercury’s retro phase tends to bring unforeseen changes and blockages, but the aggravation and frustration that many of us experience during these periods is often due to our own inability to roll with the punches. Is this due to our ego-fixation?

Mercury sets out to restructure our thinking processes and for many of us this is painful and frustrating. Unresolved issues from the past tend to push themselves forward. Moreover, these experiences reveal flaws in our internal organisation as well as our external planning, which can make us feel foolish and inadequate.

Mercury retrograde, like any cosmic aspect, affects people differently, depending on where it hits their personal charts. Some people actually prosper under a retro Mercury, especially if Mercury is retrograde but otherwise well-aspected in their birth charts. For example, I have heard of some who excel in the way they play roulette under a retrograde Mercury! It is also a time when matters begun under a previous retro period will come to fruition, or completion as the case may be. Firm decisions that have been previously made when Mercury is travelling normally through the zodiac may be implemented or finalised while Mercury is retrograde without too much worry, for experience shows that this can be done without undue problems arising.

When Mercury is retrograde, everyone’s thinking is more introspective; we tend to think about issues and concerns that relate to the sign involved. With Mercury retrograde in Taurus, people with this sign prominent in their charts will be especially prone to such introspection. Taurus is a Fixed Sign, so the other Fixed Signs, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius will also receive a touch of the lash!

Mercury turns retro on April 18 at 12°37′ Taurus, amidst a welter of planetary aspects, the most notable being the stressful square to Mars, which is certainly aggravating and has been since April 4. This aspect will be particularly strong on the 25th and 26th of April, when trying to get things done is frustrating. Incorrect information or directions may cause you to be too early, or too late. The wretched car may break down, or transportation delays trash your travel schedule. Buying a car or other equipment may be beset by snags. Others may say things, or use methods that provoke you. Avoid rash behaviour; make sure you understand any information you receive. No matter what the headaches, you still make measurable progress. You are likely to be more competitive or aggressive, which can help you accomplish more. Protect yourself against airborne colds and fever and take extra precautions when handling electrical equipment and volatile materials.

Helpful?  It was for me!

Carla’s Journal (4/28/10): “Getting By With a Little Help From My Friends”

Ah, sometimes the universe is so amazingly awesome in bringing you people and things when you need them most. Good morning, SuperForest. Early today, I was responding to an email from my best friend, who, for very good reasons, was feeling stressed.  I, for different reasons, could relate but as it so often happens, it is in trying to help others that you can also begin to help yourself. As I was writing, I proceeded by telling this friend that what she was feeling was entirely normal. I mean, think about it, we’re about to make a full on transition out of college life and perform a full on head first dive into “adulthood”. Tension doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling. So I also told her how I, for one, feel wildly unprepared but upon further reflection, I realized this wasn’t true. Because if you think about it, your entire life has led up to this moment right here and of course we’re prepared for it, because throughout our lives we’ve been provided with incredible tools to help get us through it all: love, intelligence, support, and of all those things, one of the most precious is…

friendship.

In continuing to write the response, I then attempted the impossible in trying to communicate my immense feeling of gratitude toward all this friend has given me and for her endless support and advice. Like many times before, I felt a little stumped. But not long after, as if it were manna from the heavens, I came across this stunning poem shared in Mother Teresa’s A Simple Path (which, oddly enough, had been sitting in my bookshelf patiently without me ever paying attention to it until today). Here’s an excerpt of the poem:

…And the youth said “Speak to us of friendship”
And he answered saying,
Your friend is your needs answered.
He’s your field which you sow with love
And reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside,
For you to come to with your hunger,
Seeking him for peace.”

Upon reading this I was absolutely floored. And honestly I still kinda am, because the discussions I had with dear friends shortly after sharing it in my response email only justified every word in that poem and filled me with a deep sense of awe and gratitude, Soon, this feeling was projected out towards all the wonderful friends in my life. You know who you are (yes, it’s you) and you deserve all the praise and acknowledgment in the world. Thank you! And a special thank you to SuperForest, for no matter how much I try to give, it always finds a way of giving back tenfold.

All of this made me think of getting the wheels turning on a project I thought of a few months back.

Here’s the idea: What if…you went through your list of email contacts or your Facebook friends, and chose at least one of them each day to send a sincere message of gratitude or acknowledgment.

I’m still determining of the starting date, or whether to label this as a SuperForest Street Team Mission that we could try out together, or whether to just try it out on my own and tell you guys how it went. I know you’re probably thinking “That’s a lot of people to thank and it will probably take a looong time.” But my thinking is, that at the very minimum, it would do two things. First it would give you a chance to reflect on your relationships with these people and really tell them how much they mean to you. And second, it’d probably make you feel pretty great to know that you are surrounded by such an insanely cool group of cats, too.

Curious to hear your thoughts! Do you think this is feasible? Are you interested in participating? Help me out.

With love and ever-increasing gratitude,

Carla

Wednesday Animal Ode: The Octopus

‘Podes, ‘es, or pi, eight limbs surround
beak, eyes and brain, intelligence
Stirred from his hide, inks black and darts
Away from divers. I give chase

Chandelier sprinting in the sea
In my fins and mask, am I peer
or predator? Skin shifts aqua
To coral dark, hidden again

Hi, I’m Tricia. I’m a Joyologist. Do you want to be one, too?

Hi! Hi! Let me introduce myself, as this is my first official entry as a Superforester.  I am your resident Joyologist, Love Inspiring Tricia.  I am honored that a few posts from my personal blog, I am Being, have been re-posted here and now I get to be a part of the team.

Last year, I created a job for myself on tour with Jason Mraz and was given the title of JOYOLOGIST.  Now, people often tell me that they need a Joyologist and my response is, “Great!  Create yourself as a Joyologist!  Be your own Joyologist?”  Which then brings them to ask, “How can I learn to be a Joyologist?”  I don’t have a written up, bullet-proof answer for that, but I can tell you how I became one.  It all started with Matthew and Terces Engelhart of Café Gratitude.  They are responsible for my transformation into the Joyologist and they are responsible for me getting that being the Joyologist is who I am and not just what I do for a living.

Matthew and Terces are coming to Los Angeles this weekend for their first L.A. workshop, Kindred Spirits.  What I am saying to you is GET YOURSELF TO IT!  Tell your friends, family members, co-workers anyone and everyone who can get to it, to get to it!  I promise it will transform your life.  You will awaken to your most amazing self.  These are the people who originated “BE LOVE.”  If you can’t get to it, then I highly, highly, so highly recommend ordering their books, boardgame, and logbook.  They are amazing.  They are inspiring.  They will show you that you are amazing and that you are inspiring and so much more.

Register here, right now!

And don’t worry!  They won’t make you turn into a farming raw-foodist, you can still be you, just a more awesome version of you!

And Friday night you can check out how they brought transfomation to this guy.

Bike Powered Tuesdays – Stage 2 (Assessing My Loads!)

Hej hej SuperForest!

Yes! It is Tuesday (still!) which means it’s time for some pedal powered plans!

Last week, I got myself on a bike – now it’s time for Stage 2: some science…

knowhow, knowhow, knowhow!

So, I don’t know how much of your electricity basics you remember, but I needed to be reminded of this, the key equation for our purposes:

Yes! The magic triangle! To use it, simply cover up with your hand the value you want to solve for. So

  • P = I x V,
  • I = P / V and
  • V = P / I

Here are some great online resources on electricity and pedal-power generally:

For electricity basics:

differentsourcesofelectricity.com

scienceaid.co.uk

magnificent revolution

And for pedal power:

scienceshareware.com

magnificent revolution

…but the internet is a wondrous place full of resources!

Assessing my load

The first thing I needed to do was to measure how much electricity my appliances use.  Why? to understand how much power my appliances actually use, and this will enable me to understand which appliances I can realistically power by bike and the parameters of the system I will need.  Now you can get an idea of this from looking at the labels on the bottom of things – they will usually set out the power (“watts”) an appliance uses. But sometimes the amount of power used (the “load”) varies – it might peak during startup, or use less than anticipated if you’re not fully blasting your amps. A more accurate way to assess your load is to use a plug-in power meter:

So simple to use, even I managed! simply plug the meter into the socket and then your appliance into the meter and bingo!

I took stock of what electrical appliances I regularly use, whipped out my plug-in power meter and tested, tested, tested.  As well as getting an idea of what power my gadgets use generally when they’re  up and running, when you’re planning your own system, it is important to understand what the maximum peak load would be – to ensure I don’t overload the system.  And le voila – experimental funtimes, results:

  • Phone charger: 7.4W (peak)
  • BlackBerry charger: 5W (peak)
  • Hairdryer: 1670W (high heat), 480W (low heat)
  • Digital Radio: 3.8W
  • Big lamp: 64W
  • Toaster: 1472W
  • Ipod Sounddock: 2.9W (without ipod), 7.4W (both with ipod charging but not playing, also while playing)
  • Oooold Laptop: 48.9W (start-up peak, but it seemed not to vary significantly when running itunes, playing a dvd and internet usage)
  • Kettle:  3058W
  • Espresso machine: 1362W (peak, for short periods whilst making espresso)

Looking at these results I was shocked, though not entirely surprised, that the hairdryer, toaster, kettle and espresso machine used waaaaaay more power than the other items. Creating heat uses a lot of energy. I also learned that, when I’m not using it to charge my ipod, I should unplug the sounddock and if I’m online already I may as well play music on itunes rather than separately powering up the sounddock (or I could just listen to the radio)

AND since frankly the weather is getting better and I’m [blessed]/[cursed] with very fine hair, my hair is sort of adequately dry within 5 minutes whatever setting I have the hairdryer on, I should totally stick to the less scalp-scortching low setting to save more than half the energy!

Now, to parlay these findings into specs for the system!

Love, from myself and Flash (yes, that’s what I went for;)

Imaginary Foundation: “Make A Difference” (Plus a SuperForest Remix!)

(image from imaginary foundation via boingboing)

Good Morning, SuperForest!

There’s no need for any textual accompaniment for the lovely image, above. Simply seeing things like this is enough to really tug at the ol’ heart strings. And thanks to the fine folks at Imaginary Foundation, you can download the original pdf of the image here. There’s no denying its “awww” factor, but as I was posting this, there was something about the future tense of this piece of street art that I felt needed a little adjusting. So here’s my own quirky version, and in case you need a reminder:

SuperForesters, there is no question of whether you can make a difference…

You already do.

And we love and appreciate you very much for that. <3

Love from,

Your friends at SuperForest

Inspiration Information — Kauai

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.  Fools stand on their island opportunities and look toward another land.  There is no other land, there is no other life but this.” -Henry David Thoreau

Usually I write  every week about people and organizations that have inspired me through the power of positive change.  But this week, I write about a destination.  Kauai- the Garden Isle.  Jewel in the tropical crown of the Hawaiian Island chain.  A land of unbelievable beauty, where I have the unique fortune of spending the next few weeks.  What follows is my impressions from the field:

(Superforesters Jordan and Rebecca… and their dolphin friends)

It’s Wednesday, 11 pm, and I am lying naked in the middle of an orange grove, busting clouds.  It’s a silly game, you lie on your back and stare at a passing cloud until it breaks apart.  In my case, I’ve been lying here a good 20 minutes and not a single cloud busted.

I couldn’t care less.

The grass is wet and clings to me.  I reach up and pluck a pregnant orange from a low hanging branch.  Tear apart its forgiving skin and plunge my teeth into its juicy heart.

In this moment, under the soft tapestry of rain and electric hum of crickets, as the half moon widens it Chesire grin and the sticky juice of this half-devoured orange slides down my mud-streaked skin… I feel myself whole again.  My slender pulse plugged into the great heartbeat of the world.

Here is happiness.

Sitting at the airport 2 days ago waiting to board, my mind flooded with impending deadlines.  Failed romances.  The slow steady rumble of walls closing in.  I studied the other passengers — barking at their untethered children.  Muttering under their breath as they read the morning news.  Applying sunscreen two hours too early.  Strange creatures all.  All of us trapped inside the constructed prism of our brains.

30 minutes later, I’m staring out the window at the remote coves of Kipu Kai, watching the ocean curl full-length into the powerful arms of the mountains.  Liana, the pretty local girl sitting next to me (who just happens to be close friends with one of my best friends, Jamie – small world, smaller island), turns to her beautiful one year old daughter – Liliana, and says, “look, we’re home.”  I can’t help but smile… she might as well be talking to me.

Kauai has a restorative effect.  Something in the fragrant air, the deepened shades of green, the salt-water mists rising, steaming, off the suicide cliffs.  Everything here vibrates to some primal current, a melodic harmony that ripples through the body, that opens up the pores and widens the eye and outright demands your attention.  Thought dissipates.  Worry ceases its pathetic little existence.  Stress curls into a compact ball and simply evaporates into the wind.

Hot tub relax machine: (Superforesters Jordan, Jackson and Rebecca)

There is magic in these islands.  Soothe and salve in the siren embrace of these temperate waters.  Nature here will seduce you, fold you in the steady caress of rain and rainbow and rock you into an infant slumber.  You can’t escape it, it would be foolish to resist.  Even one day here is a full return to the essence of simplicity, a state of womb-like bliss.

I spend most my days in front of my little computer, this electric window with panorama views of worlds and characters that don’t exist except in my mind.  There is little difference in daily routine: I wake slow and rise in gradual measures.  I salute the sun.  I eat breakfast and I write.  At night I read or watch a movie.  I make dinner.  I run.  And the thing is I could be anywhere.  But then I lift my gaze for a moment from the letterbox of my computer, and the ocean unravels before me in long sunkissed beaches.  And the pressure grind of work is instantly reduced in perspective to the backdrop of mountains and sky.  I know at any moment I can put it all aside, take a plunge or a surf, and that easily my spirit will completely recharge.

What a blessed life I lead.

I spent the weekend in the company of old friends and random acquaintances.  Diving off the pier in Hanalei.  Eating ice cream.  Picking up hitch hikers and learning the life-changing powers of kung-fu and beat-boxing, while munching fresh cut sugar cane and singing the blues.  Drinking fresh mint ginger tea with permaculture hippies and discussing the meditative effects of mushrooms… and composting.  Meeting two musician brothers with last name MakePeace (their parents legally changed the name on their marriage certificate, so yes it is official), and listening to them serenade the sunset.  Driving around with Jackson, talking Superforest.  Listening a lot.  Laughing more.

(Surf for World Peace: Jackson)

Yesterday I snorkled at Tunnels beach.  Diving deep.  At one point, dropping beneath the jutting lip of a massive coral ledge and finding myself swimming through the cathedral archway of an underwater cave, schools of iridescent fish darting past.  Lungs burning.  The sunlight streaming through lava rock cracks overhead.  And everywhere the serene beauty of worlds untouched and unseen.

I wish I could share this with everyone.

Today I sit at the bowl of Hanalei bay, waiting for the swells to roll in — as behind me the sun presses its golden lips to the horizon.  And before me the grand sweep of Mt. Ka’ala, shimmers like an oil painting –its crown of clouds and 1000 foot waterfalls seemingly frozen, backlit and surreal in their majestic beauty.  A place to rival Eden.

And everywhere the rain descends in soft curtains.  And a perfect wave rises up.  And a pod of twenty spinner dolphins leap and spin 100 yards off.  And as I race to the nose of this borrowed old longboard and throw my hands overhead, everything I know of myself slips away into blue.  I hear someone shouting with unadulterated excitement – a laughing, exultant cry.  It takes me a long moment to recognize that laughter as my own.

Always merry & Bright,

Nature boy Aaron

Four. Years. Go.

This video BLEW ME AWAY. So inspiring!

WE ARE THE RENAISSANCE!

All you need is tea

I was sitting this morning, sipping my cup of spiced chai apple tea when I noticed this quote on the side of my tea box:

Happiness comes from accepting the present situation, whether it is something you wish to savor as long as possible or change as quickly as you can.  Neither is possible without acceptance as the starting point, because without acceptance you are living on the periphery of your life.  There at the edges, you can’t fully enjoy the good stuff or do anything about the rest.” –Victoria Moran

Acceptance.  Happiness.  Tea.   Start small, think big.
