Space Invader: Rubikcubism!

Sometimes you watch a video online and have a sudden urge to share it with as many people as humanly possible because of its blinding awesomeness. In this case, I was sold within the opening seconds…Rubik’s Cubes and The Beatles’ “Come Together”?! What a blazin’ combination!

Parisian artist “Space Invader” is the creator of this amazing video. What a talent! Personally, I’m plenty pleased to be able to make a Rubik’s Cube have solid colors on each side. Simply thinking about creating pixel artwork with those little things is enough to make my head spin.

See more of Space Invader’s crazy cool artwork by checking out his website.

And if you really love this man’s work, head on over to New York’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery between June 27 and July 25 to see an exhibition of his work!

(Love to my modern met for sharing)

Found Poetry Friday: Ulysses

On the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month SuperForester Jordan “rediscovers” a literary gem from the vast treasure trove of an art form that, in our technological age, has become largely under-appreciated and “lost”.

Today our pop culture is dominated by digital media. Movies and television rule the roost (which is wonderful for me, as a screenwriter). But this wasn’t always the case. Fiction was once all the rage, and at a time now 200 years past, Poetry reigned as the pinnacle of pop culture. Yes people followed poetry, and poets like Keats, Browning, Tennyson, were superstar celebrities.

The Brad Pitt of his day: Alfred Lord Tennyson (check out that mustachio!)

In the spirit of reviving poetry’s golden days, today I bring you an oldie but goodie. The great, the classic, the epic “ULYSSES”. Made re-famous by the film Dead Poets Society.

The poem takes the form of a speech that famous Greek hero Ulysses / Odysseus gives to his crew of men in the twilight of their old age, to rouse and inspire them to one last great adventure. Read to the end, for one of the greatest lines ever.

“Ulysses”

It little profits that an idle king,
By this still hearth, among these barren crags,
Matched with an agèd wife, I mete and dole
Unequal laws unto a savage race,
That hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know not me.

I cannot rest from travel: I will drink
Life to the lees: all times I have enjoyed
Greatly, have suffered greatly, both with those
That loved me, and alone; on shore, and when
Through scudding drifts the rainy Hyades
Vexed the dim sea: I am become a name;
For always roaming with a hungry heart
Much have I seen and known; cities of men
And manners, climates, councils, governments,
Myself not least, but honoured of them all;
And drunk delight of battle with my peers,
Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy.
I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethrough
Gleams that untravelled world, whose margin fades
For ever and for ever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnished, not to shine in use!
As though to breathe were life. Life piled on life
Were all too little, and of one to me
Little remains: but every hour is saved
From that eternal silence, something more,
A bringer of new things; and vile it were
For some three suns to store and hoard myself,
And this grey spirit yearning in desire
To follow knowledge like a sinking star,
Beyond the utmost bound of human thought.

This my son, mine own Telemachus,
To whom I leave the sceptre and the isle
Well-loved of me, discerning to fulfil
This labour, by slow prudence to make mild
A rugged people, and through soft degrees
Subdue them to the useful and the good.
Most blameless is he, centred in the sphere
Of common duties, decent not to fail
In offices of tenderness, and pay
Meet adoration to my household gods,
When I am gone. He works his work, I mine.

There lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail:
There gloom the dark broad seas. My mariners,
Souls that have toiled, and wrought, and thought
with me
That ever with a frolic welcome took
The thunder and the sunshine, and opposed
Free hearts, free foreheads you and I are old;
Old age hath yet his honour and his toil;
Death closes all: but something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks:
The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep
Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends,
‘Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew
Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

The 4fives and crew went to the High Line today. SuperForester Meg was kind enough to come and take these exquisite photos. The amazing Ladd brothers stopped by for a surprise get reacquainted session. Then we paid a visit to sculptor Chris Astley’s studio where we learned about his art and made some ourselves! A great day was had by all.

This was the last day of the first season of the 4fives blog, which is now the SuperForest Seedlings program.

I have learned so much from you, 4fives. I have had such fun learning alongside you.
No matter how old you get, nor where you travel to, you will always have the 4fives blog, and you will always have SuperForest.

Much love and luck to you all. Remember to always have fun. I expect all of you graduates to visit Miss Ladd and I next year and say hello to the season 2 class.

Your friend,

-Jackson

Impactist: Leo’s Song!

leos-song

Good Morning SuperForest!

It is around 9:30am here in California, I’ve been awake for about two hours, and this little animation is by far the most adorable thing I’ve seen all day (lol!) Made by Kelly Meador and her husband Daniel Elwing (also known as Impactist), this animation follows the adventure of pyramid who becomes friends with a human…Yeah I know, I didn’t know either but apparently there are geometric shapes that live out in outer space.

Without further ado, Leo’s Song:

Beautiful! So now you’re probably wondering whether Leo is the pyramid or the man. The answer is neither because as it turns out, this wonderful animation was made to accompany a music track they had already written after visiting a cat. A cat named Leo.

A little random. But in this case, random is beautiful. Random is inspiring!

Thank you, Impactist! Not only was the music great, but the story was wildly amazing as well. The youth teaching peace to the elders and rejoicing?!! Fantastic!

You can visit Impactist’s website here for more!

Have a great day!

Thursday’s Inspiration Information — Lidia Schaefer

“Property is intended to serve life, and no matter how much we surround it with rights and respect, it has no personal being. It is part of the earth man walks on. It is not man. ” — Martin Luther King, Jr.

The picture you see above is a snapshot of a handful of the 1500 students who attend the “Lidia Secondary School”, in Feres Mai, Ethiopa.  A school that was built through the efforts of a single woman who wanted to make a positive change in the lives of the young children in her native home.  That woman’s name is Lidia Schaefer.

To understand the scale of Lidia’s accomplishment, you must first understand her story.  Lidia was born in Ethiopa and immigrated to America in the 1970s to escape the outbreak of civil war.  She took up work as a manicurist in Washington D.C.  Had two kids.  Worked 12 hour days 6 days a week for the last 30 plus years.  And 20 years after she had left her native village, Lidia returned to Ethiopa for a short visit.  She was stunned by what she saw.  The nearest school was 18 miles away and children would walk 3 hours each way to attend classes… not in a classroom, but under a tree.  She made a promise then and there that she would open a school for all those children.

But how can one woman, a manicurist, bring about such enormous change?  How could she raise the funds, build the school on her own?  Now if your mind started to make the leap — she works in D.C. so perhaps some of her clients are senators, speakers of the house, power players with the ability and access to grant Lidia’s wish — guess again.  This is not an Oprah Winfrey fable, with Lidia using her resources and influence for good.  The true reality is that Lidia is a normal, hardworking citizen with little influence and extremely limited resources.  So when I said she built the school on her own, I really mean ON HER OWN.

Imagine this: working 12 hr days to pay your bills, your rent, your food and both your children’s education.  And then taking everything left over,  1/3 of your salary, and putting it toward a school.  How long would it take for one person to raise enough money solely on their own efforts?  Lidia did it in 10… YEARS!

Clients and co-workers rally to the cause, holding raffles or buying individual windows or doors to help contribute.  In 1998, a distant relative of Lidia — a young 9 year old girl named Medhine — was mauled and killed by a Hyena on the long walk home from “school”.  And that was it, Lidia knew she could not give up on her promise.

By 2002, Lidia had raised enough money to begin basic construction.  She had also personally lobbied the Ethiopian government to donate land on which to build.  But still, she knew she didn’t have enough to finish construction.  So she sold her car, and the house she’d work so hard to buy.  And with over $250,000 in hand, she gave all the money into the completion of her promise.

Today over 1500 students attend the 8 building campus, that houses 16 classes, a science lab and a library.  And Lidia’s selfless act of altruism has inspired Ethiopian communities across the country to follow suit and raise money for more schools.  So far, they’ve raised enough to build 12 more schools to be completed this July.

And still Lidia continues to give part of her salary away.  The school needs supplies. Computers.  Lidia wants them to have computers so they can “speak to the whole world.”  Maybe start their own blog.

Here is a woman who embodies the purest spirit of giving.  Who sacrifices her own comforts, her own material possessions, her own home even, so that others who don’t have… can have.   In her own words: ” I don’t work with my head… I really work with my heart.”

Thank you Lidia for reminding me that we are not defined but what we own or how much we acquire, but rather by the extent and breadth of how wide we can open our arms.  One individual truly can make a difference, can affect tremendous positive change in the lives of many.  It starts with painting one fingernail.  It ends with 1500 smiling kids.

Shout out to the always inspiring CNN heroes columns for the story.  You can find many more by clicking the link to their webpage.

Amazing Architecture: Taiwan’s Solar Paneled “Dragon” Stadium!!

Good Evening, SuperForest!

When it comes to sleek and incredible architecture, it goes without say that the Japanese have got it going on. And it is thanks to Japanese architect Toyo Ito that we have this incredible structure to gaze at in wonder and amazement.

dragonstadium1

This stunning stadium can be found in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and the “dragon’s” striking scales are made up of…

dragonstadium2

Solar Panels!

Double win! It’s a gorgeous stadium and it is the first in the world to provide all its own electricity using the power of the sun! Alright so there is no denying the fact that this stadium (built for the 2009 World Games that’ll take place in July) is awesome, so now I’ll drop some facts…

  • The 19 hectare structure has a seating capacity of 55,000!
  • The 8,844 solar panels will generate more than enough electricity to power the building’s 3,300 lights and two giant television screens.
  • The panels will generate 1.14 million kWh of electricity per year, preventing 660 tons of annual carbon dioxide from being pumped into the atmosphere from traditional power stations!!!

dragonstadium3

Kudos, Taiwan! Bravo, Toyo Ito!
Yay, green architecture and engineering!!

    Love to all,

Cha-ching! Sleek and functional modern design for pennies!

    Gooooood Morning SuperForest!

I, SuperForester Jackson, will be making a rare live appearance, for one night only, at Urban Rustic in Brooklyn next Tuesday (the 30th) night, to teach a lucky squad of attendees how to magically turn trash into treasure, by turning glass bottles into vases and glasses. Vases and glasses that can be sold! Or have liquids drunk out of them! Or have flowers placed within them! The choices are seemingly endless.

Yes folks, I will be providing all tools and materials needed, as well as a steady stream of snappy patter, and by evenings end you too will posses the secret of the magical trash-to-treasure transformation!

Seating is limited, space is limited, so if you’d like to come, rock it first come/first served style and get there early. They have good local beers, and a veggie burrito that made me fondly recall my good old days in foggy San Francisco.

Bring any glass bottles you’d like to see magnificently and magically transformed. (And if you have any folding cash that you need cleaned and pressed, I’ll happily take it from you and arrange to have it done at a low and reasonable rate.)

YERT – Your Environmental Road Trip

YERT (Your Environmental Road Trip) is a year-long eco-expedition through all 50 United States. With video camera in hand and tongue in cheek, we’re exploring the landscape of America’s unique approach to environmental sustainability. We believe that Americans want to do the right thing – they just don’t want to look strange doing it, and they don’t have the time or the means to explore all the options. That’s where the YERT team comes in. Follow us each week as we shamelessly bathe ourselves in the best (and weirdest) of America’s ecological progress with a mix of outrageous antics, provocative examples, and thoughtful reporting. Got an idea? Want a clue? Let’s get rolling!”

YERT is the fabulous work of Mark Dixon, Ben Evans, and Julie Dingman Evans. Check them out, they’s hilarious!

Road trip win! These cats are doing neo-environmentalism so right! Have fun, spread awareness, have fun, and have fun. That’s the new way!

    Check out YERT.com

    Yay!
    Have fun!

    Women Are Heroes

    jr01

Flicking through Reader’s Digest while in a waiting room yesterday, I stumbled on this cool project by French photographer JR: Women Are Heroes. The portraits above are of female victims who’ve lost loved ones through violence. They’ve been plastered across buildings in one of the most violent favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The project is designed to illustrate the women’s courage and pivotal roles in their communities. Below, you’ll see a trailer for the same project in Africa.
