Enjoyable Music: Ronald Jenkees

Hello there SuperForest!

Yesterday I stumbled upon an immense talent. His name is Ronald Jenkees.

Without further adieu, here is a song entitled Throwing Fire (very aptly so):

One listen and I was hooked. I can’t stop listening. His YouTube channel can be found here, and for ease of access his website can be found… here! So far one of Ronald’s CD’s have been released, and he’s currently working on number two (if you buy more than one at a time, he will autograph both)! He always speaks of having fun while making music, saying, “Any day you’re having fun with music is a good day”.

Rarely is it that I come across such music that oozes personality like Ronald’s does. It feels plain good to listen to. Good, enjoyable music always comes effortlessly at the perfect time. On top of that, the stylish hat you see him wearing is made out of 100% recycled materials (and is named the Fireball Fedora; this guy has got it down).

I hope you all have an infectiously happy Saturday.

Love,

Chris

India Ready to Debut $10 Laptop!

picture-17

(Like this, but ten times cheaper.)

Just found this article on slashdot about a new $10 laptop. You read that right: ten US dollars. For a laptop.

From the Times of India:

“The $10 laptop project, first reported in TOI three years ago, has come as an answer to the $100 laptop of MIT’s Nicholas Negroponte that he was trying to hardsell to India. The $10 laptop has come out of the drawing board stage due to work put in by students of Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT-Madras and involvement of PSUs like Semiconductor Complex.

“At this stage, the price is working out to be $20 but with mass production it is bound to come down,” R P Agarwal, secretary, higher education said.

The mission would seek to extend computer infrastructure and connectivity to over 18,000 colleges in the country, including each department of nearly 400 universities and institutions of national importance. The mission would focus on appropriate e-learning procedures, providing facility of performing experiments through virtual laboratories, online testing and certification, online availability of teachers to guide and mentor learners.”

Wow… If this laptop comes to pass, the impact that it will have on all of those young minds who receive one is incalculable. We eagerly watch and wait to see what comes next.

Cheers, Slashdot! You dotty ol’ dot dot, you!

Save-A-Seed Coalition: The Roots Are in Place

save_a_seed-starburstred

Good Morning SuperForest!

We ended last year by beginning a project called the Save-A-Seed Coalition.
The SASC is an informal group that any of our fellow bloggers may join, as there is but one requirement: write a post.

In this post all one must do is mention the Millennium Seed Bank, and the existence of the SASC, and whammy, you’ve joined in the fun!

The idea being that with enough bloggers posting and linking to one another, all mentioning the Millennium Seed Bank, we will accomplish many amazing goals at once:

1.) We’ll get to know one another.
Through this exercise we at SuperForest have gotten to know many amazing bloggers around the world, from Cliff in Connecticut who designs jewelry, to Maaja in Kerala, India, who is teasing us by withholding her mothers secret recipe for coconut chutney. We’ve all joined together because we’re interested in using modern environmental techniques to spread the message of preservation and resource protection.

2.) Those who read us will probably read you.
And vice versa! The more blogs that link together the greater the chances for sharing great information.

3.) It will raise awareness about the Millennium Seed Bank.
Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings, they say. Well, every time a blogger posts about a subject, a worthy idea gets lifted higher on the “worthy ideas pile.” The Millennium Seed Bank is a worthy idea because it is so cheap to preserve a plant species ($3,000) compared to trying to preserve anything else, like an animal species or an ecosystem.

That the MSB is a non-profit, non-political, non-sect organization makes its objective practically controversy free. They want to collect and preserve a small fraction of the plant species on Earth, how could we not use our internet skillzzz to help them accomplish this?

4.) Many hands make light work.
To ask one person to contribute three grand to save a species is a bit heavy. But asking a ten thousand people to each contribute 3 cents seems much more doable. By spreading the “ask” far and wide across the internet, we increase our chances of meeting our goals. Already, the SASC has raised $2,023.71! Our single largest contribution was $900.00, and our smallest was $5.00, but 27 SuperForesters answered the call when we asked them for help, and we are well on our way to preserving one single species.

5.) It is fun.
In the way that chain letters were kind of thrilling but far too big a pain to take part in, the SASC is built to snowball without all the usual hassle of collaboration. One post, one time, is all it takes. And if you are thrilled with the way you are taking a part in something that will grow, gain in momentum, and could potentially lead to the MSB being fully funded and secure, then you can post to your hearts content. Plus you get to meet all of your fellow SASC members and see what they’re excited about.

6.) It could lead to still greater things!
Imagine, if a coalition of united bloggers can help raise enough money to preserve a plant species for hundreds of years, what else could they do? Could they build an outreach clinic? Could they save a school? Could they support the arts? End hunger?
What other amazing things can a sympathetic group, united in cause and philosophy, do to change the world for the better?

That is what SuperForest is setting to find out.

There is a quote that serves as the guidepost for all of Team SuperForest, for whether they know it or not, it is the basis for the Humanifesto:

“My country is the world, and my religion is to do good.”
-Thomas Paine

These are the thoughts that drive us. What can be done when we work together, now that the web has made working together so easy?

The following amazing bloggers have joined the SASC and are helping snowball the idea of collaborative modern environmentalism.

Ladies and gentlepeoples, we proudly present the Save-A-Seed Coalition!

SuperForester Anung!
SuperForester Maaja!
SuperForester Fri!
SuperForester Tracy!
SuperForester Jenn!
SuperForester Laurie!
SuperForester Shawna!
SuperForester Cliff!
SuperForester Leigh!
SuperForester Christine!
SuperForester Jesse!
SuperForester Lindsay!
SuperForester Silvia!
SuperForester Sonja!
SuperForester Mimi!
SuperForester Neal!

16 bloggers! With over thirty blogs between them! Thirty posts and links back to the MSB! $2,000 raised already! Add the members of Team SF to that list and we’ve 27 bloggers untited thus far!

It’s working!

Here is the master plan: We would very much like the SASC to be 50 bloggers strong. 50 bloggers would be huge.
So we are asking all those who’ve joined the SASC who know other bloggers to spread the word and ask them if they’ll join in the fun. (And you, right now, reading these words, join us. It’s about time you started your own blog anyway.)

Write a post. Include these two links:The Millennium Seed Bank & The Save-A-Seed Coalition

(Email us when you’re done and we all get to see: superforestnyc(at)gmail(dot)com.)

When we get to 50 bloggers we begin phase two: Get Mainstream AttentionBoingboing, wired, Huffpo, Swissmiss, Gems Sty, NotCot, Slashdot, Reuters, BBC, NYTimes. A mention on any of these would be a huge momentum boost.

The more people paying attention the greater our chances of succeeding in making sure the world understands the worth of affordable species preservation, and that the MSB can carry out its noble duties with the full support of those who stand to reap the benefits of their work, which is all of humankind.

The internet is nothing more than a huge global argument over what is best in life, what is most worthy?

We put forward the motion that modern collaborative action in support of noble causes is where it’s at.
And so we resolve to re-double our efforts! We will work tirelessly to raise the additional $1,000 dollars, and we will relentlessly champion the MSB and the good people that work there.

SuperForester Christine has created lovely new SASC logos, and she’s got a whole quiver of them ready to roll for those who’ve joined the SASC and would like to have a cute widget for their blogs!

Soon, the SASC will have its own microsite, where you will be able to view its mission statement, see who has joined, learn how much we’ve accomplished together, and download cool bespoke widgets. Fun fun times!

sas_logoleaf_ucap_green
Thank you to all the members of the Save-A-Seed Coalition, to all who have contributed to the MSB, and to SuperForester Christine for designing these great new logos!

Love to All and stay tuned for more fun,

Jackson and Team SuperForest

SuperForester Laura Hanna Presents Two Solution-tastic Films: “Commons” & “A City Made of Waste”

Good Morning SuperForest!

We just got an email in from filmmaker and video artist, Miss Laura Hanna! She has just released two very cool films.

In the first, “Commons” Laura and Co. explore a system that reinforces the collective good and ways to support it.

“A commons arises whenever a given community decides that it wishes to manage a resource in a collective manner, with a special regard for equitable access, use, and sustainability…”

-David Bollier

Ooooo! We like that.

Next is a great little piece, “A City Made of Waste”, which explores the new housing synergism evolving along the California/Mexico border. Recycled materials from San Diego are shipped South to become walls and houses in Tijuana, and the opportunities for growth and collaboration are ripe and rampant.

Check it:

Laura created “A City Made of Waste for NY MOMA’s exhibition: Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling

After watching these two extraordinary pieces, I jumped on the phone and rang up Miss Hanna, who agreed to grant us a little interview. That will be this coming Tuesday, so the interview and profile should be up later next week.

Fun!

Laura Hanna is amazing. We can’t wait to see what she does next!

This Day in Awesome History: “The Rooftop Concert”

Today is January 30, 2009 and you know what that means…exactly 40 years ago The Beatles performed their last ever public concert as a group. At around mid-day, on the rooftop of Apple Headquarters at No 3 Saville Row, the four men began to spread their magical sound.

The concert lasted 42 minutes and you can watch it all by clicking here!

Sittin’ On The Dock

For the past few days we’ve had pretty nice weather here in the Netherlands. A nice clear sky with a hint of cirrus, a bright winter sun and a temperature that manages to get a few degrees above the magical 32 ºF (or 0 ºC). This is what winter should be like.

Now, you may be wondering why I’m telling you all this.

Today when I biked out of school the low sun was beaming straight into my eyes and all of a sudden everything felt perfect.

Then, all of a sudden this song popped up in my head. Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay by no one but Otis Redding. I know that the mindbogglingly awesome Jackson talked about it a few weeks ago but I think it is so good that it deserves a repost. Here it is.

Have an awesome weekend!

What’s the time, eh?

For everyone, every weekday has got a riddle of tasks and activities. And in this 21st century world a weekday tends to become a routine somehow. Get up at 6.30, breakfast at 7.00, commute at 8.00, work at 9.00 and so on. It’s probably quiet recognizable, isn’t it?

Sometimes people tend to get kind of depressed about their daily routine, because every day is the same as the previous and the next one. This makes it a challenge for an artist to do something fun with it and thus transform an uncool factor to a cool factor.

And this is exactly what the watch designers over at Mr Jones Watches succeeded in. They transformed the daily routine into something cool.

The Average Day

This is the Average Day Watch. And it does exactly what it says, it shows you the average day. I just can’t help but love the way that sleep and work bend over each other at the place where a regular watch would’ve shown a ’12′.

In my very humble opinion the design of the watch is totally awesome. It’s both functional, funny and true. The people that have made this are creative geniuses.

Creative geniuses that watch a lot of TV.

Thomas Keely

When an artist manages to design or create a product that caries both functionality and artistic value he or she is often referred to as a product, or industrial designer. These people design everything from the letterbox you throw your letters in to the computer you are using right now.

According to this definition Thomas Keely would be a product designer too. But I don’t think he is. Judge for yourself.

brushtoothbrushnarrow

A more proper job description for Keely would probably be product redesigner. But why put him in a box? Let’s just call him an artist for the occasion.

So Keely likes to redesign modern classics into objects that feature more human traits. Such as the hairbrush with all the little fingers and the toothbrush with all the tiny people on it.

Thomas goes beyond fingers and little figures though. His website features a variety of other designs worth taking a look at. For example a camera with a human eye as lens. Or a chair transformed into a mouth (including proper teeth).

Thomas Keely is an expert in implementing human traits into common objects, and he does it with a sense of humor. The only question that I have left is whether or not Keely’s toothbrush can compete with mine. (And if that is a yes, I would like to ask a toothbrush-company to start producing the above piece of awesomeness).

SuperForester Chris Presents: Daily Dose of Imagery

Dear SuperForesters,

Let me tell you about an awesome photography site named Daily Dose of Imagery. Sam Javanrouh, the creator and photographer, posts one image every single day. He hasn’t missed a single day in the sites history (albeit a few guest posts during a week long period). I’ve been visiting DDOI (a handy acronym, all the hip kids are doing it [just kidding, you can do it too!]) for a little over a year now. And I’ve enjoyed every single photograph. They are inspiring, beautiful, and always invoke a feeling of awe.

Here’s today’s picture:
picture-32
And here’s one of my favorites, from June 13th of last year.

picture-112

It’s a strange thing. Every once and awhile I’ll flip through all of the pictures, no matter how many times I’ve seen them before. And even though they aren’t my creation, I remember what I was feeling the first time I saw them. I remember every one of them. I remember how they made me feel, what they made me think of, what stories popped into my head, what dreams they made me conjure up, and for that instant it isn’t about the photograph anymore. It’s about the art, the beauty of the world around us. Of course, the world can’t fit in a picture frame, but Daily Dose of Imagery offers a teensy slice of it. Enjoy and savor it. Make it yours.

I hope this finds you as well as it did me.

Love,

Chris

SuperForester Maaja and the Search for Coconut Chutney!

picture-19

Good Morning SuperForest!

Today something happened to me that reminded me why I love both blogging and the internet so ferociously.

Since we started the Save-A-Seed project, I’ve been able to get to know a bunch of fellow bloggers and learn about who they are and why they blog. It has been wonderful and incredibly informative.

Today I’m sitting at my desk and someone pings me on gchat. It’s none other than SuperForester Maaja, who joined the Save-A-Seed Coalition a short while ago.

Maaja and I get to talking and the conversation slowly came around to what both of us had eaten for breakfast, (one of my favorite questions as the answers are so wildly different.) Maaja replied that she had eaten dosa with chutney. After she explained that dosa was like a rice pancake, I asked her what kind of chutney she put on it? She said: Coconut chutney!

(Now, I’m from Hawaii and have a fair bit of experience with the coconut and the foods it can be made into, but coconut chutney is new to me.)

Maaja helpfully explained the process for making coconut chutney, which her mother and grandmother are in charge of as they are the best cooks.

I don’t want to spoil it by telling you the recipe, or the process involved, but I will say that it was fascinating in the extreme and only lead to more questions.

The end result was twofold: Maaja and I got to share interesting information about each other’s cultures and favorite foods, and Maaja agreed to be the Head of the Kerala section of SuperForest. So SuperForest now has eyes and ears on the ground in Southern India, and very keen eyes and ears at that!

(We’d planned on expanding Team SuperForest to include every state in the US, and then every country on the planet, but I suppose we don’t have to do it in any particular order. Kerala today, tomorrow the world!)

Now, Maaja is on a mission to document the making of the next batch of coconut chutney her Granny makes, and she and I are going to collaborate on a post about it!

How fun!

Cross-cultural idea sharing is such a blast. The short while that Maaja and I spent IM’ing was one of the highlights of my day.

So, thank you Maaja! Thank you Kerala! Thank you India! Thank you internet! Thank you SuperForest! Thank you Blogger and WordPress!

What a blast connectivity and positivity are.

Love to All,

Jackson

P.S. Would you like to be the Head SuperForester of a particlar place, region, or country? Fine with us. Drop us a line at superforestnyc(at)gmail(dot)com.

SuperForest Comics Presents: Obaman Part Two!

Here we go with my sketch of page two of Christine Norrie and my Obaman comic. Since C and I are collaborating, these images represent only half of what the eventual comic will be like, and since usually one doesn’t publish ones sketches, I feel a brief proviso is in order:

I believe very strongly in both process and refinement. So having unfinished work up doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I hope that seeing the way work grows and improves (hopefully for the better) will allow you a deeper connection with the work. That is my hope anyway…

Here we go!

When last we checked, Obaman had fallen into a deep meditative trance, leaving his physical body in order to help a goose-downed plane! Will he be able to help? Will his concentration be deep enough?! Will Joe Biden be able to order the pizza with everything?!

Read on!

picture-16

(click to embiggen)

What could possibly happen next? Tune in next week for the thrilling conclusion of Obaman! (A Norrie/Nash creation) And then tune in again to see what it all looks like when we’ve finished with it. In fact, just go ahead and tune in every day. Better yet, set SuperForest as your homepage.

And please, please visit Spookoo, the greatest thing since sliced cheese.

Love!
