Luckily for us, the High Line is right outside of our office window.

Delaware’s New Wind Farm!

(pretty picky via this cat)

The Net is just so chock full of good, encouraging news these days, it’s like being a kid in an eco-goodness candy store. Really, where to start?

On the home front, CNN has just reported that Delaware has just reached an agreement to build an off-shore wind farm, capable of powering the homes and businesses of over 50,000 Delawarians. (Delawarites? Delawareses?) People in Delaware.

Read on:

“Using electricity generated by the wind, “Delmarva Power will be able to light about 50,000 homes a year, every year” for the duration of the 25-year contract, Lanard said, with first power expected by 2012.

He said the project may help stabilize consumer energy costs, since the contract locks in the price Delmarva will pay per kilowatt-hour.”

“Each turbine in the Delaware project is to sit on a pole about 250 feet above the waterline, where the ocean is about 75 feet deep. The poles are to extend 90 feet into the seafloor, and the units are to be constructed to withstand hurricane-force winds.

From the shore, the park will be visible only on clear winter days, and the turbines will be nearly invisible during summer months when Rehoboth Beach fills with vacationers, Lanard said.

Each blade on the three-blade rotor is to be 150 feet long.

“If they can see them at all, the turbine blades would cover about the size of your thumbnail, and the poles would be about the width of a toothpick.”

Here’s the original article.

So, the US is getting what will undoubtedly be the first of many off-shore wind farms.

Great news. Take heart, for the big change is upon us.

In the meantime, be excellent to each other, wear a helmet when you’re biking, and don’t steal other kids toys when you’re playing in the sandbox.

Love to all,

NY Times: Florida to Buy Sugar Maker in Bid to Restore Everglades!

(photo via flickr user acmelucky777)

OMG!

This is wonderful, inspiring news!

The state of Florida has worked out an agreement with U.S. Sugar that will allow the sugar producer to continue operating for six more years, and then…

Allow the land to return to its natural state!

Looky!:

“LOXAHATCHEE, Fla. — In a deal that environmental groups said would be the largest ecological restoration in the country’s history, a plan for the state to buy the nation’s largest producer of cane sugar was announced Tuesday by the governor and officials of U.S. Sugar Corporation.

Joe Skipper/Reuters

Governor Charlie Crist of Florida, with Robert H Buker Jr., the chief of U.S. Sugar, held up an agreement struck between the state and the sugar producer.

The intention is to restore the Everglades by restoring the water flow from Lake Okeechobee, in the heart of the state, south to Florida Bay. That flow had been interrupted by commercial farming and the Everglades have suffered as a result.

Under term of the tentative deal, U.S. Sugar would continue farming and processing for six more years before closing the business and allowing 187,000 acres of land to return to its natural state. For its part the state would pay U.S. Sugar $1.7 billion.

Governor Charlie Crist said the deal was “as monumental as the creation of the nation’s first national park, Yellowstone.””

187,000 acres of land! That’s approximately 2,200 Disneylands!

Plenty of room for ‘gators, and birds, and snakes, and all manner of wildlife to move back in and get to work setting things right.

What deliriously wonderful news.

Here’s the original article.

And a huge thanks goes out to the NY Times, U.S. Sugar, Governor Charlie Crist, Robert H. Buker Jr., and the good state of Florida.

You’ve made our night, y’all.

Have an excellent evening.

Operation Yes

(photo via flickr user (michelle))

Good Afternoon All,

As an exercise, just for fun, try something today.
Think for a second about the word yes.

YES

Allow this marvelous little word to trickle into your consciousness.

What can yes do for you today? How can yes make your day a better one?
What about the people around you? How can your inner yes help them?

How can yes help you improve your environment?

During every interaction you have today, keep the word yes in the back of your mind.
Try to minimize your use of the word no and maximize your use of yes.

Yes will get you farther than no any day.

Bring yes along for the ride today and see how it affects things.

Love to all,

Swimming Snake-Bot!

Morning All,

Just saw this at dvice.com

“Developed by the Hirose Fukushima Lab in Japan, the robot was designed to explore the movement mechanics of snakes and how they’re able to move easily with no appendages. Now that they’ve developed a robot that can clearly swim pretty easily in water, it’s not clear what they’ll use it for other than terrifying beachgoers, but I’m sure they’ll come up with something a bit more useful. I hope so at least.”

Hirose Fukushima makes some cool ‘bots.

How Obama Reinvented Campaign Finance

One of the major things that has drawn we SuperForesters to Barack Obama is his ‘net savvy. For reals, this cat understands what web 2.0 is, and most importantly, what it can be.

Check out this infographic up at xplaned, showing how Obama’s micro-campaign finance system has beaten the odds.

G’Obama!

NY Times: Americans Becoming More Tolerant, Accepting of Others

Just saw a great article on nytimes.com about religious tolerance, specifically about people’s openness to regard other religions as fair alternate pathways to eternal life.

“For example, 70 percent of Americans affiliated with a religion or denomination said they agreed that “many religions can lead to eternal life,” including majorities among Protestants and Catholics. Among evangelical Christians, 57 percent agreed with the statement, and among Catholics, 79 percent did.”

Fascinating! Read the article here

A wise man once said: “Difference. The only way to deal with differences is to respect them.”

These are hopeful and wonderful times of growth, and we are lucky to be living in them.

Go tolerance!
